Planning a safari to Zambia? One of the most common questions we get asks is: "When should I come?" The answer depends entirely on what you want to experience. Kafue National Park is a dynamic ecosystem that changes dramatically throughout the year.

At Mubuyu Bush Camp, we tailor our experiences to the rhythm of the seasons. Here is a guide to help you choose the perfect time for your adventure.

The Green Season (April – May)

As the rainy season fades, the bush is lush, vibrant, and bursting with life. This is a magical time for photographers who appreciate dramatic skies, clear air, and landscapes washed in emerald green.

  • Wildlife: Many animals give birth during this time, so you may see nursery herds of impala and puku.
  • Activities: The Kafue River is typically high, making for exceptional boat safaris and fishing.
  • Vibe: Quiet and exclusive. You often feel like you have the entire park to yourself.

The Peak Winter Months (June – August)

This is the start of the dry season. Temperatures are cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings (pack a fleece!), making game drives and walking safaris very comfortable.

  • Wildlife: As the bush begins to dry out, visibility improves. Animals start to congregate closer to the river as inland water sources dry up.
  • Activities: Walking safaris are excellent during this time as the grass thins out.

The Heat of the Season (September – November)

For the hardcore wildlife enthusiast, this is often considered the "best" time. It is hot, dry, and dusty, but the wildlife viewing is spectacular.

  • Wildlife: Predator action heats up. Lions and leopards are frequently seen waiting near the remaining water sources. Large herds of buffalo and elephant are common sights at the river's edge.
  • Fishing: This is prime Tiger Fishing season as the water warms up and levels drop.

Our Seasonal Closure

Please note that Mubuyu Bush Camp typically closes from December to March during the height of the rainy season, as accessibility becomes difficult and we allow the bush to regenerate undisturbed.
